Usually it’s the guy who doesn’t want to settle down. But for Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, it was the opposite.

Life & Style can exclusively reveal that the main reason for theirbreakup is that Ian wanted to get married and she just wasn’t ready.

“He was starting to talk marriage and she is just getting started on her career,” a source close to the actress tells Life & Style.

Their 10-year age difference played a major role — at 34, it’s natural for Ian to want to settle down.

“She loves him, and they still talk every day, but she is just not ready to make that huge commitment yet,” the insider reveals, adding, “Maybe in 10 years.”

We doubt Ian wants to wait until he’s 44!

And it seems he’s cryptically addressed their parting on Twitter today.

Yikes.

As Life & Style reported, the Vampire Diaries split after dating for three years. The pair met on the set of the hit CW show in 2009.

“I didn’t want to be dating one of my co-stars — my goal on the show was to be professional,” she’s said. “But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time.”

In late April, the brunette beauty enjoyed an all-girls vacation with the newly single Julianne Hough in Miami. The Safe Haven starlet, 24, recently ended her two-year romance with Ryan Seacrest, who is 14 years her senior.

At least these BFFs have each other to lean on!

At today’s CW Network upfront event in New York City, The Vampire Diaries‘ Nina Dobrev was a vision in blue, wearing a cobalt Versace dress with braided detailing and a pair of iridescentleopard print heels from Rupert Sanderson.

Just as her character’s wardrobe has changed dramatically, so too has Dobrev’s real-life style. Over the past year, the actress has become a perennial best dressed lister, wearing looks from both household name designers like Donna Karan, Elie Saab, and Oscar de la Renta, and edgy up-and-comers like Thakoon and Guishem.

To what does she attribute her killer style? EW caught up with the actress to find out — and to ask her whether she agrees with Gwyneth Paltrow’s declaration that this year’s Met Gala “sucked.”
“I think having a stylist, and also growing up and changing as a person,” Dobrev, who has worked with stylist Ilaria Urbinati for a year and a half, said of her evolution. “I used to be a lot more immature — and younger — and my style reflected that. Now I know what I want, and I know what I like. I also have more confidence to take risks.”

Though Dobrev has gained wisdom and confidence with age, she admitted she was still a bundle of nerves at this year’s Met Gala, also known as the “Oscars of Fashion.”

“I was definitely nervous about it. Monique [Lhuillier] didn’t start making the dress until the Tuesday before, so less than a week,” Dobrev admitted. “It ended up being really awesome, but it was definitely a little nerve-wracking not doing the final fitting until the day of [the gala].”

And how did it feel to be singled out as one of the Met Gala’s best dressed considering the field included mega-stars like Beyoncé, Anne Hathaway, and Sarah Jessica Parker?

“It’s crazy. This year [everyone had] the liberty to push the envelope,” Dobrev, who attended the event for the first time in 2012, said of the punk theme. “As soon as we walked in to the actual ball, I felt like the energy was more fun and relaxed this year.”

Everyone, please give us a moment while we compose ourselves. Okay, here it goes… It seems that one of TV’s hottest on- and off-screen couples, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, has *gulp* called it quits.Us Weekly reports that after more than three years of dating, the Vampire Diaries twosome’s broken up. However, it doesn’t sound like a regular relationship-gone-bad: “The couple, who first took their romance public in 2011, are consummate professionals… and will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started.”

Personally, this is like a stake to the heart for us Nian fans. Remember what Nina said about Ian during her Seventeen cover shoot? “The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said ‘Nina: Why she wouldn’t date any of her co-stars.’ And then cut to two years later… it’s funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time. I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars — my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time.”

If you’re still a fan of the pair, you can still get your Delena feels from TVD (when Elena’s not going crazy). What do you think about their split? Weigh in!

How long did you know this was coming?
We knew when we made the decision to make Elena a vampire that we needed to get her to the place of utter and complete loss and tragedy and darkness so that we could take her down the road of being a vampire without humanity. And so we knew that we were going to be sacrificing somebody we loved when we started the season, and very early on in the season, we made the decision about who that was going to be. Then we asked ourselves a lot of questions and debated but ultimately stuck to it.

Did you anticipate most of the fans writing off Jeremy’s death as a fake-out? Many of them were actually like Elena, now that I think about it — total denial.
That’s what we wanted to do, truthfully. We wanted to end the previous episode with Jeremy’s death, but I said as I was writing the script that [I knew] the ride I wanted the audience to be on in this episode. The instant that episode 14 was over, the very first thing somebody was going to say is, “No, wait! Was he wearing his ring?” Then somebody else was going to say, “Wait, the ring doesn’t work anymore.” Then somebody else was going to say, “But what if it does? You never know.” And we wanted to dramatize all those questions because on this show, death is not always final. And we do have this sort of reputation for turning a story on its head and surprising people. So we wanted to play those questions so that as Elena came to terms with reality and what had happened, so too, would the audience.
